An independent, sovereign institution built to bring artificial intelligence’s full potential in health care to every nation, governed for the benefit of people, not corporations.

The Global Health Imperative (GHI) is the Imperative Foundation’s international track. Its purpose is to help nations set their own terms for how artificial intelligence is used in their health care, before those terms are set for them by outside companies.

Health care is one of the few challenges every nation shares, and one of the few where artificial intelligence can make a measurable difference within years, not decades.

Why A U.S. Health Care Foundation Works Globally

The United States accounts for 43.8% of the world’s health spending, with 4.3% of the world’s people (World Health Organization, 2023 data).

Part of what the U.S. overspends could pay to build an advanced AI system dedicated to health care alone, as the Foundation has proposed since 2021.

Such a system learns from the health experience of many populations. Every nation that takes part makes it better for all.

Most nations cannot afford to build health care AI of their own. Without a shared platform, they will take whatever terms AI companies offer, including terms for their citizens’ health data.

What The Global Health Imperative Proposes

One AI system for health care, built with several participating AI companies, shared with every participating nation on that nation’s own terms.

An independent Information Trust, so each nation keeps control of its citizens’ health data.

Governance by an independent institution, not by any single company or government.  

Partnership with each nation’s own technology companies, so the benefits stay local as well as global.

Where Things Stand

GHI is in its founding stage. The first step is discussion with nations and foundations committed to AI under human control and to equity in health care, leading to a founding conference of participating nations.
